A province-by-province breakdown of what to expect when marijuana becomes legal

While growing rules will be the same across the country, details, such as where the drug can be bought and used, are being left up to the provinces and territories

Sometime later this year, the federal government is expected to pass Bill C-45, legalizing marijuana for adult recreational use.

The Senate continues to debate the bill, with a final vote scheduled for June 7. Passage in the Senate would give the House of Commons two weeks to deal with any amendments before the summer break.

Although some senators are calling for a delay, the Liberal government appears intent on getting the bill passed this summer. That means legal sales will likely start late summer or early fall.

While the rules governing cultivation will be uniform across the country, many details, such as where the drug can be bought and used, are being left up to the provinces and territories. Here’s a look at how the national cannabis landscape is shaping up, as of early May.
