Autism In Children Improved By 80% With CBD Oil Therapy
Researchers in Israel have discovered that cannabidiol (CBD) is an extremely effective therapy for children suffering from autism.
CBD is the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant and is used therapeutically to ease inflammation and is considered to be a neuroprotectant.
Though many children in North America are already using CBD oil as therapy, this new study provides more insight and gives validation to many physicians who prescribe the drug.
In the study, when children were given CBD, scientists noticed that their symptoms improved by eighty per cent.
This number is especially promising since no improvement was recorded when the children were given current medical therapies.
Children were given high CBD cannabis oil with twenty per cent CBD and only one per cent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for seven months. THC is the part of the cannabis plant that causes a person to experience a “high” feeling.
Scientists saw a marked improvement in the children’s behaviours, communication, and noted decreased anxiety via this study.
This data comes as many studies report on the therapeutic uses of CBD in both autism and epilepsy, which generally occur together. With the news that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved a CBD-based medicine called Epidiolex for the treatment of epilepsy, more and more scientists are trying to do research to see which other conditions the drug can be used for.
Studies like these will also propel researchers from around North America to do more research on children. This used to be a controversial issue in medical research – to do such studies on children, but with these promising results, scientists can better understand both epilepsy and autism so they can treat it better.
One such study is underway at the New York University headed by Dr. Orrin Devinsky, who was one of the main researchers behind the approval of Epidiolex.
